S A M A N D R O S E S T E I N F U N D A N D G O F F F A M I L Y F U N D A FAMILY INVESTED IN THE COMMUNITY. Today, multiple generations of Marcia Stein Goff’s family live in our community. They are professionals, a police officer, a boat captain and a speech pathologist, to name a few. Marcia first moved to Erie County decades ago when she was just six years old and her brother Jerry was nine. Over time, her family not only established donor advised funds at the Community Foundation, they became an essential part of the community fabric as well. Her father, Sam Stein, had a sales route that took him through the area and, ultimately, he decided this was where he wanted to live. Sam, who was from Youngstown, worked out of Cleveland at the time, and found our commu- nity an ideal place to settle and raise his family. Sam Stein lived to be 98 years old and was a highly successful entrepreneur. A coffee salesman at first who, in 1940, with little money and a big idea, innovated pre-formed hamburger patties that he sold to the restaurants he had been calling on. “My father could sell any- thing,” according to Marcia, and pre-formed patties was no exception. Over a 40-year career he created Chef’s Pantry, Inc., that sold frozen meats and prepared entrees, and Sam Stein Associates, a manufacturer of food processing equipment for a worldwide market (and the forerunner to the JBT Food Tech operation in Sandusky). Even as founders of the Community Foundation, the founders of Stein Hospice, and the many other generous donations to various local institutions, Sam and Rose Stein’s real legacy in Erie County may be the extended family of daughter Marcia Goff who continues to call Erie County home, surrounded by her very active family that will likely be a valued part of our community for generations yet to come. 8 |
